On March 19, 2025, around 80 passionate participants gathered in Boden for the "Symbiosis - From Waste to Resource" workshop, where we explored the exciting potential of turning waste streams into valuable resources in Norrbotten. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their time, knowledge, and expertise!
Here are the key takeaways from the workshop:
Diverse Waste Streams with Huge Potential
We identified various waste streams, from food industry by-products to wild food resources, biological waste, industrial waste, and animal by-products. The potential for circular resource use is immense.
Collaboration and Networking Are Key
There is a clear need for matchmaking platforms, local logistics, and cross-sector collaboration. Together, we can unlock the true value of waste.
Technology and Small-Scale Solutions
The development of flexible, cost-effective technologies and small-scale infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, is essential for scaling up these ideas.
Overcoming Regulatory and Attitude Barriers
Current legislation and societal attitudes often pose challenges. Creative solutions, such as integrating waste resources into school meals or engaging community groups in sustainable practices, can help overcome these barriers.
Skills and Workforce Development
To bring these ideas to life, we need skilled professionals and entrepreneurs. There is a strong demand for education and support for the next generation of innovators in the region.
Systemic and Market Thinking
Creating value from waste requires strategic thinking and market development. Connecting local businesses with waste streams can help build a sustainable ecosystem that benefits everyone.
We are truly grateful for the collaborative spirit that made this workshop a success. The ideas and lessons shared will play an important role in Arctic Food Arena’s work going forward. We also hope they sparked inspiration and lead to several new collaborations!
